A much awaited Hindi film I was keeping my eyes on. Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biographical depiction of (of course) Gangubai Kathiawadi- whose lover cheated her into a brothel, when she was young. How she became Gangu from Ganga, how she emerged as a queen of the area and fought for the rights of women- we have named prostitutes.
The life sketch of Gangubai clearly portrays that to become a real life heroine is more important than to become a heroine- on the poster. I like watching biopics, because I believe, every life has a beautiful journey of its own, and deserves an applause.
Coming to the film!
When you are watching a Sanjay Leela Bhansali– you can’t expect anything less than- a lavish set, attractive cinematography, pleasing music, and a good ensemble of actors, and performances.
The promos already had Alia Bhatt all around. And without any doubt, she is good. What came to me as a surprise was Shantanu Maheshwari. He fitted in really well in his character of a sweet yet ODD young man. After all who falls in love with a prostitute, and wants to marry her? Rest of the cast is also good. Yup, no special mention of Ajay Devgan- because he was just Ajay Devgan in the movie.
Gangubai Kathiawadi has some heart tearing scenes- especially in the beginning. To name one- when Ganga is standing at the door and introduced to her job and mannerisms of a prostitute.
I won’t call it an extraordinary film. But the film is a watch for some unforgettable scenes. Not to forget, the songs! Each song depicts a story in itself. Each one has an emotion to present. Each song will give you jitters. Each song would want you to be loved. Each song will flood your heart with waves of sentiments.
